Physical Education

Intent

What are we aiming for?

Children who:

  • understand that physical activity is part of a healthy life style

  • have the opportunity to develop skills in a wide range of physical activities

  • have the opportunity to work individually, in groups and in teams

  • reflect and improve their performance and contribute positively  in evaluating the performance of others

  • participate positively and keenly

Implementation

What do we do?

We teach the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and National Curriculum for key stage 1 and lower key stage 2.

In the early years physical development is a prime area. Carefully planned activities ensure that children have opportunities to develop and improve their fine motor and gross motor physical skills throughout the day. In addition to indoor space there is a large, self- contained outdoor area that enables children to be active and use a range of resources including bikes and structures to climb. As part of their curriculum they do have a more ‘traditional’ PE lesson each week that is led by a sports specialist. Assessment is recorded on development matters and at the end of reception a judgement for ‘physical development’ is made.

In years 1 to 4 PE is taught weekly. The carefully structured plans are delivered by sports specialists from a partner organisation. Children in lower key stage 2 have swimming lessons as part of their PE curriculum. PE is well resourced and the large grounds we have enables us to have PE both indoors and out.

Children in year 4 have the opportunity to become sports leaders as part of the local schools sports partnership. Year 4 children also have the opportunity to lead activities at lunchtimes.

Through our membership of the local Schools Sports Partnership we are able to participate in local competitions and events.

Activity is encouraged at break times. Our large playground has equipment to climb on and dedicated areas for ball games.

Sporting Activity

In addition to our curriculum PE we offer a number of sports clubs, for example gymnastics, archery, tag rugby and  multi-sports. Currently these are free of charge because the sports premium funds them. To enable as many children to participate as possible we offer places on rotation. We use independent providers and coaches from 'Future Games' to lead many of these clubs.

The school football team 'Linslade Leos' is run by parent volunteers. It meets in the school grounds on a Saturday
